LADMMI’s 2008 graduating class: An exceptional employment rate
In the days following graduation, the majority of LADMMI’s fifteen 200 graduates were recruited by well-known companies, accepted to internationally reclaimed school or granted prestigious fellowships.
A few eloquent examples
Laetitia Bérubé
After having been named artist of the month by Artere.ca, a hub dedicated to Montréal’s up-and-coming artists, on May 27, Laetita Bérubé became a fellow in the Marie Chouinard Company. She can currently be seen in Orphée et Eurydice, performed at the Théâtre Maisonneuve ― Place-des-Arts and at the Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa.
Sofia Borella
This summer, after various overseas fellowships, notably in improvisation with Andrew L. Harwood, Chris Aiken and Angie Hauser, Sofia Borella will continue participating in Imprudanses, improv dance matches that oppose two professional dance teams and can be seen as part Usine C’s official programming in September. Then, thanks to a grant from the Office Québec Wallonie Bruxelles pour la jeunesse, she will go to Belgium to perfect her technique release skills and participate in a workshop with the Ultima Vez Company.
Sophie Breton, Yasmine Lamoureux and Clémence Ménard
Over the next months, three LADMMI graduates—Sophie Breton, Yasmine Lamoureux and Clémence Ménard—will be touring Canada with the multidisciplinary show Samsara, performed in Québec last May. Music, dance and the equestrian arts come together to tell a story by choregrapher Nadi Malengreaux, her husband Gérard Huc and the white mare Samsara.
Gabrielle Desgagnés
After a month of training in Vancouver with Noam Gagnon, Gabrielle Desgagnés will take part in Exclusive Intensive, a much lauded fellowship with Tedd Robinson. After a busy summer, like Sofia Borella, she will go on to perfect her skills in Brussels, thanks to a grant offered by Office Québec Wallonie Bruxelles pour la jeunesse.
Thierry Huard
In addition to a fellowship at the Carré des Lombes in June, Thierry Huard will participate in the creation of a new piece by Dany Desjardins, a 2007 LADMMI graduate, which will be performed at Tangente in October as part of the Graduates section of the Danses Buissonnières event. Next spring, he will perform in Montréal’s Maisons de la culture in a duo danced with choreographer Isabel Mohn.
Rémi Ouellette-Laurin
Rémi Ouellette-Laurin has been a member of the O Vertigo company for a year already. He will tour Europe next fall in the recreation of La Chambre blanche, a piece that garnered the 1992 Grand Prize from the Conseil des arts de la Communauté urbaine de Montréal and the Dora Mavor Moore Prize in Toronto.
Nicolas Patry
Starting in June, as part of Québec City’s 400th anniversary festivities, Nicolas Patry will dance in the piece La baigneuse, un homme et quatre loups, choreographed by Chantal Caron. Then, from July 29 to August 15, he will be in the show Le chemin qui marche, produced by Ghislain Turcotte and choreographed by Harold Rhéaume. He will top off a busy summer with an Exclusive Intensive fellowship with renowned choreographer Tedd Robinson.
Simon Portigal
After high-level auditions, Simon Portigal was accepted into the training program at PARTS (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels, one of the most internationally prestigious contemporary dance schools, and directed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.
Louliko Shibao
The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) granted Louliko Shibao a fellowship as part of the Vivacité Montréal program, which is aimed at young professional creators who are visible minorities. She will go to Japan this fall to take part in a dance and giant calligraphy project.
Manuel Shink
Like Nicolas Patry, Manuel Shink will participate from July 29 to August 15 in Le chemin qui marche, produced by Ghislain Turcotte and choreographed by Harold Rhéaume. Then, from November 2008 to March 2009, he will perform in a new creation by Daniel Bélanger, choreographer for the Code Universel Company.
Founded in 1981 and specialized in training contemporary dance performers, LADMMI, l'école de danse contemporaine, is a teaching establishment affiliated with the Cégep du Vieux Montréal and accredited by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport. Recognized for its avant-garde and rigorous training, LADMMI is a centre of excellence in the performing arts.
