José Navas biography
Born in Venezuela in 1965, José Navas completed his education in New York and moved to Quebec in 1991. Recognized as a talented and charismatic soloist on the international scene, he quickly became a choreographer in demand.
A first phase of group choreographic creation was striking for its colourful audacity. Since 2005, however, he has focused his research on pure movement, preferring abstraction and sobriety. Portable Dances, Anatomies, and S bear the imprint of this undertaking. Nevertheless, in 2008, José Navas presented an autobiographical portrait of himself in Miniatures, a solo show brimming with emotions, in which he renewed his passion for the solo format and succumbed to the pure pleasure of dancing.
Among the thirty creations to his credit, Sterile Fields (1996), One Night Only 3/3 (1998), Perfume de Gardenias (2000), Solo with Cello (2001), Adela, mi amor (2004) and Anatomies (2006) represent landmarks on his choreographic journey.
José Navas currently teaches Interprétation IV to LADMMI graduates. The piece created during that course will be presented at Maison de la culture Frontenac on May 27, 28 and 29, 2010.
